Smoking cessation service in Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Comprehensive Mental Healthcare, Guntur was inaugurated by the district collector sri K Suresh Kumar IAS on 16 November 2012. The occasion was also attended by the superintendent of police Sri Ake Ravikrishna IPS, the Municipal Commissioner Sri K Sudhakar, DM&HO Dr M Gopi Naik, Ex IMA AP State President Dr N Kishore, Guntur IMA President Dr N Satyanarayana, The Superintendent Guntur General Hospital Dr T Venugopala Rao. Several doctors in Guntur, members from general public and media correspondents also attended.

District Collector Sri K. Suresh Kumar explained the harmful effects of using tobacco products like cigarettes and ghutka. He also inaugurated equipment which measures carbon monoxide in breath.

SP Sri A. Ravikrishna explained the efforts by police to implement the COTPA 2003 act in preventing smoking in public places. He unveiled posters printed with pictures of harmful effects of use of tobacco.

Municipal Commissoner Sri Sudhakar unveiled pamphlets describing the harmful effects of tobacco use and the methodology of smoking cessation service.
